02 · About the exhibition

Wizernes

La Coupole near Saint-Omer in Hauts-de-France is a Second World War V2 bunker complex, and inside its dome-shaped building in Wizernes operates a modern 3D planetarium. The Planétarium 3D de La Coupole screens immersive films projected at 360 degrees around the audience, with active 3D glasses included in every session.

The programme moves between history and the cosmos: titles such as D-Day, Voyager and Retour vers le Big Bang set the tone. Sessions average 50 minutes, which makes the planetarium easy to pair with a visit to the History and Memory Centre on the same site.

The dome does most of the work. Films are projected at 360 degrees, so the image wraps around the auditorium instead of sitting on a single screen in front of the seats, and the active 3D glasses included in the ticket add depth to the scenes. Subjects as different as D-Day and the Big Bang become remarkably immediate in this setting.

Sessions average 50 minutes: long enough for a complete story, short enough to leave room for the rest of the day. Tickets are sold online, and the combined ticket covers the planetarium and the History and Memory Centre together, so a visit can move naturally from the wartime history of the bunker to the immersive films under its dome.
