Cao Fei: Testimonies to the Near Future
02 · About the exhibition
Basel
Cao Fei: Testimonies to the Near Future is the first Swiss solo exhibition dedicated to the Chinese artist Cao Fei and the largest survey of her work in Europe to date. The show fills all four floors of the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart building with immersive installations, video and digital media works spanning roughly thirty years of her career.
At the center of the exhibition are her virtual world projects, including RMB City, Nova, Oz and DUOTOPIA. It is presented as a ticketed special exhibition whose admission also includes the museum's collection, and it runs from 30 May to 11 October 2026.
A visit unfolds across four floors, each holding its own group of works rather than one continuous sequence of rooms. Immersive installations alternate with video and digital media pieces, and the virtual world projects RMB City, Nova, Oz and DUOTOPIA run through the survey as a common thread.
The program reaches beyond the exhibition itself: on 26 September 2026 the museum hosts a related free program day called Worlds Yet to Come. The ticket for the special exhibition also covers the collection, so one visit can take in both.
- The exhibition runs from 30 May to 11 October 2026 at Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, St. Alban-Graben 8, Basel, and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00, closed on Mondays.
- Admission is CHF 30 for adults, CHF 20 for students aged 20 to 25 and CHF 12 for teens aged 13 to 19; BaselCard holders pay CHF 22.50, and on the first Sunday of each month admission drops to CHF 16.
- Children aged 12 and under and holders of museum passes enter free; details and tickets are available on the museum's official website.
