Madrid

Horizon of Khufu is a free-roaming VR expedition that takes you inside the Great Pyramid of Giza as it stood about 4,500 years ago. It was created by the producer Excurio in collaboration with Harvard Egyptologist Peter der Manuelian and has reportedly been seen by more than two million visitors worldwide. In Madrid it runs at the Fever Immersive Center (Fever Hub Madrid) on Calle de Raimundo Fernández Villaverde 57.

There are no headsets to stare at while standing still: this is a walk you physically make. You move through reconstructed spaces on foot and the story unfolds around you, under the local title Horizonte de Keops: Una expedición por el antiguo Egipto. The Madrid production brings one of the most successful immersive expeditions of recent years to the Spanish capital.

You put on a VR headset and set off on foot. Because the format is free-roaming, you do not stand in one spot: you walk, and the space follows your steps, so the pyramid grows around you instead of passing like a film. The route follows the expedition through corridors and chambers of the monument, with the Giza of 4,500 years ago rebuilt around you.

The difference from a conventional exhibition is that you set the pace: the expedition advances when you advance, and the architecture of the pyramid is the scenery you walk through. This combination of real movement and virtual scale, built on the collaboration with Peter der Manuelian, has made the format a reference point of location-based VR and earned it an audience of over two million visitors.
